Who can forget good ol’ government cheese, affectionately known throughout the hood as “welfare cheese?” For the unfortunate youngsters who missed this sweet deal here’s some history. The U.S. government kept giant bricks of generic cheese stashed away somewhere (maybe in Hangar 14 with the Roswell UFO). The U.S. Food & Nutrition Service provided the cheese monthly, in unsliced block form, to welfare and food stamp recipients during the 80′s and early 90′s.
The government claimed it “slices and melts well” but us po’ folk needed a chainsaw to cut it and a blowtorch to melt it. Still, many of us stood patiently on that infamous “cheese line” stretching around the block. Even Ghostface Killah paid homage on “Rainy Dayz” from Only Built 4 Cuban Linx (“I gotta get mine/like my Old Earth blessed the cheese line…”)
