The American media will heavily publicize the image of ONE black man in handcuffs on his way to jail… but totally ignore FIVE HUNDRED black men graduating from college.
This photo was taken at Morehouse College back in May but I had to post here, otherwise it may never be seen again. Society is comfortable with the ignorant nigga huggin the block, slangin krills. On the contrary, 500 black graduates strike fear in the collective heart of the status quo. The above image rocks the boat because black folks on a whole are traditionally defined by the worst among us. Those of us who abide by the law, work hard and provide for our loved ones are considered to be anomalies. White folks on a whole are represented by their best elements… but their poor, uneducated, drug-addicted, welfare-dependent members are disowned like illegitimate kids. James Holmes may be the latest in a very long line of Caucasian mass murderers but he’s cast off as a “deranged loner” whose behavior isn’t representative of his entire race. Lone white dudes won’t be stopped and frisked because they fit a criminal profile.
Well I’ve got news for you: This is a scene that takes place yearly at Morehouse and other colleges around the country. Maybe if images like these were given equal airtime along with the negative ones, our youth would have more to aspire to. Seems like the only time black folks ban together and mobilize is when a new pair of Jordans come out. But photos like the one from Morehouse prove that we can gather together for greater things.
