They Die By Dawn looks like a pretty interesting flick, even though it’s only 45-minutes long. I haven”t seen a decent black Western since Posse in 1993. The cast is pretty solid; Michael K. Williams (who played Omar on The Wire and now Chalky White on Boardwalk Empire) is born for a role like this. My baby Rosario Dawson is in it, making it a must-see (or rather, lust-see). Isaiah Washington, a brother who was exiled from Hollywood over some bullshit a white actor would’ve been forgiven for, is also a co-star.
Here’s a bit of background info on They Die By Dawn, courtesy of Rolling Stone:
Multitasker Jeymes Samuel is making a name for himself as a musician, filmmaker, writer and producer. Operating under the moniker The Bullitts, Samuel recently released a short film, They Die By Dawn, with a star-filled cast that includes Michael K. Williams, Erykah Badu, Isaiah Washington, Jesse Williams and Rosario Dawson. The gun-slinging, black cowboy western is accompanied by a new album, They Die By Dawn and Other Short Stories, which is set for release on June 4th through Kilburn Lane Music.
Now you can get an exclusive first listen to the single that was one of the main inspirations for the film. The title track is a mix of hip-hop and distinctly western-style guitar, with a beat that feels like a galloping horse, and features Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def), Jay Electronica and Lucy Liu (as a narrator).
“‘They Die By Dawn’ is the definitive sound of the Bullitts,” Jeymes tells Rolling Stone. “It’s the epitome of what I call ‘creating from the hip.'”
I like the poster art for They Die By Dawn. It’s a Hip-Hop related flick but nobody’s holding stacks of money, pimp cups or champagne bottles. There’s not a stripper to be found. Yeah, there’s guns… but at least nobody’s holding them sideways. Very refreshing. Check out the trailer below and support quality black cinema for a change.
