Amar’e Stoudemire was right when he proclaimed, “The Knicks are back.”  They’re back… to being garbage.

At least racist Donald Sterling got coveted free agent Chris Paul for the Los Angeles Clippers, so the title of worst owner in professional basketball goes to James Dolan of the New York Knicks.  “Guitar Jimmy” is an idiot for jumping the gun and gutting a solid squad with good chemistry to acquire a single player who probably would’ve ended up in NYC through free agency.  Even if Anthony didn’t join the Knicks, point guard Deron Williams (who would’ve fit the team better than Melo) and other good players were on the trading block.  Now the Knicks bench is paper-thin and short on reliable role players.  Only a dysfunctional organization like the Knicks could hold all the cards in the Carmelo Anthony trade talks and end up as the loser.

Exiled general manager Donnie Walsh did a commendable job getting under the salary cap and making the Knicks relevant again but he also shoulders some blame for this horrid season.  One of the Knicks’ main problems is that they have no point guard to play floor general and run the team’s offense.  There was a wealth of talented point guards available in the 2009 NBA draft, including Brandon Jennings, Ty Lawson and Eric Gordon.  Walsh wasted New York’s pick on lackluster power-forward Jordan Hill, who is no longer with the team.

Still, Guitar Jimmy ain’t gonna fire himself so somebody else has to take the fall for this wretched losing streak.  With the exception of Tyson Chandler, Josh Harrelson (pre-injury) and Iman Shmupert (who has fizzled after hitting the “rookie wall”), the players on this team have no fire and are grossly under-performing. Stoudemire hasn’t earned his $100 million check this season, Carmelo’s ball-hogging is both gift and curse… plus the bench is a steaming pile of turds.  To top it off, Melo & Amar’e don’t mesh on the court.  They all share the blame for this debacle of a season (currently at 7-12).

But although the talking heads at MSG beat around the bush, I think the biggest problem is coach Mike D’antoni.  He must be fired.

The Knicks need a coach.  D’antoni is not a coach, he’s a system… a philosophy.  He’d be a good assistant for a defensive-minded, disciplinarian coach.  But D’antoni is a rebel out to prove that he can win a championship with nothing but offense (three-point shots specifically), defense be damned.  He’s a one-trick pony who can function only with specific, hand-picked personnel and the perfect alignment of stars, moons and planets.  Without that, he is useless.

Pat Riley is a coach.  Riley won chips at the helm of the high-flying “Showtime” Los Angeles Lakers in the 80′s and with the half-court game of the Miami Heat in 2006. In between that time Riley coached the 90′s Knicks: a physical, defensive goon squad that wasn’t adept at scoring but used brute force to strong-arm their way to the ’94 NBA Finals.  Riley can tailor a successful game plan around the strength of his players in ways D’antoni never can.

Most coaches don’t have the luxury of choosing their personnel.  When Doug Collins signed as coach of the Philadelphia 76′ers last season, he inherited an underachieving squad with a mediocre record.  Collins would probably love to have a superstar at his disposal but he motivated that same Sixers team into the playoffs last year and has a 13-6 record thus far this season, putting them at the top of the Atlantic Division.  That’s good coaching and game-planning.

D’antoni is too stubborn, or perhaps incapable, of building a game plan around players that don’t fit his “system.”  With one of the league’s best front courts, the Knicks are better suited playing inside-out… no 3-pointers should be fired before pounding the ball into the paint a few  times.  Instead, D’antoni encourages them to run down the court and jack up threes.  They took a whopping forty-three 3-point shots against Miami the other night and it almost worked… until the shots inevitably stopped falling.  Once the treys went cold, D’antoni had no back-up plan or answers as usual.

His “system” is so role-specific that his players never become more complete and well-rounded within it.  That’s why Danillo Gallinari has improved with the Denver Nuggets under George Karl, who is an excellent coach.  Gallo, the Nuggets’ second-leading scorer, is allowed more flexibility and has tapped into other elements of his game.  D’antoni, on the other hand, ignored Gallo’s other qualities and had the 6-foot 10-inch small forward camp out behind the arc to shoot 3′s.  A promising rookie like Iman Shumpert will never develop properly in this one-track-minded system.  D’antoni doesn’t have the balls to bark on Melo or Stoudemire, his alleged superstars, when they screw up.  So he unfairly takes out his frustrations by screaming at Shumpert and Toney Douglas, his two young whipping boys.  That’s a poor teaching method and Shumpert, like Landry Fields before him, has regressed before our very eyes.

Sure, D’antoni can help a player inflate his scoring stats in the “Seven Seconds Or Less” system where there’s always a green-light to shoot, but that’s as far as the development goes.  Amar’e was great in that system when he and D’antoni were members of the Phoenix Suns but it’s apparent now that Steve Nash isn’t around, Amar’e has no low-post moves whatsoever.  That’s because in the SSOL game-plan, he didn’t need any.  Slashing to the basket and scoring in transition was all Amar’e needed to do and he was never coached by D’antoni to do anything more, including defense.

Aside from not being able to make in-game adjustments and squeeze the most out of his talented players, D’antoni should be given a pink slip because:

1. His body language on the sideline and at press conferences tells you everything you need to know: He’s defeated, disinterested and knows that his reign is over in New York.  His attitude trickles down to the payers and a team is usually the embodiment of their coach.

2. Carmelo Anthony sat out against the Miami Heat, one of the best teams in the NBA, to rehab from various injuries.  He isn’t the superstar LeBron James is but ever since their high school days, Melo has always been able to shut LeBron down.  Why didn’t D’antoni force Melo to sit against lesser teams like the Bobcats and Cavaliers, so he could be available for the Miami juggernaut? Melo also sat out against the top-ranked Oklahoma City Thunder.

3. D’antoni is always biased against certain players and won’t give a chance to other guys who may help the team.  With Baron Davis rehabbing from a back injury and Mike Bibby being a shell of his former self, young Jeremy Lin is the only true point guard available.  Lin isn’t perfect but at least he can penetrate,  drive to the hoop and quickly dish to an open man.  Yet, D’antoni refused to give him substantial minutes until last night’s losing effort against the Rockets.  Lin admitted that he hasn’t even practiced with the first unit.  Why not? He can’t be any worse than Toney Douglas, who’s been God-awful this season.  Steve Novak, a three-point specialist, barely sees the court.  Why not see what 7-foot tall rookie Jerome Jordan can contribute on a nightly basis instead of running Tyson Chandler into the ground?

4. Why are terrible shooters like Renaldo Balkman and Jared Jeffries launching threes? Why is Harrelson, at a beefy 6 foot 10 and 275 pounds, shooting threes instead of punishing opponents under the basket? D’antoni refuses to pound the rock down low and relies on the trey-ball too much. Players are being misused. This team is built for a half-court, triangle offense but D’antoni isn’t capable of scripting Plan B.

5. Remember when Phil Jackson flipped on Pau Gasol, one of the Lakers MVP’s, for being soft during last year’s playoffs? Phil was so angry he slapped Pau’s chest like they were about to fight.  How about the NFL game where the Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien went ballistic on future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady for his poor play? Those are examples of coaches who aren’t afraid to hold their star players accountable.  Mike D’antoni, on the other hand, is meek and timid when dealing his so-called superstars.  The inmates run the asylum under his watch.

A lot of coaches have already been fired this season for much less.  The Knicks are flawed for sure but there’s more than enough talent on this squad to have a record better than 7-12.  That’s unacceptable.  As a long-suffering New York Knicks fan, I can only pray that justice will be served.

D’antoni, the bell tolls for thee.

The sleek, sexy iPhone is the most popular smartphone on Earth… but is it too smart for its own good? Indeed our lives are made easier with Siri, the iPhone’s artificially intelligent software that literally speaks when spoken to.  It’s very convenient to have Siri recommend the nearest French restaurant, set its alarm clock at request and perform other actions.  To make Siri even more chummy, Apple claims that the software adapts to the user’s personal preferences over time and personalizes results.  Innovative… but creepy.

Human beings continue to up the ante and increase the intelligence of machines.  Reminds me of the Terminator franchise where Skynet, an artificially intelligent computer system developed by the military, became self-aware and decided to terminate humankind.  To a degree, technology has already terminated our humanity: verbal conversation is a lost art as we interact more through social networking, texting and ever-changing 3-letter abbreviations.  But in Terminator, Skynet took it upon itself to launch nuclear missiles at Russia, who responded by firing nukes at the United States and its allies.  Billions of people were wiped out.  Skynet created an army of Terminator cyborgs to sniff out and kill whoever survived.

So next time you entrust Siri to find the nearest strip club, ask yourself: “What happens when Siri decides that its fed up with humankind’s demands?” Don’t be naive; a computer revolution can happen, folks.  If Siri acted as the brain of a rebellion, it could align with U.S. military software to provide brawn.  Keep in mind that 31 percent of all U.S. military aircraft are now robot drones.

Here’s an interesting excerpt from The Danger Room,  one of the many fine departments at Wired magazine:

In 2005, only five percent of military aircraft were robots, a report by the Congressional Research Service notes. Barely seven years later, the military has 7,494 drones. Total number of old school, manned aircraft: 10,767 planes.

A small sliver of those nearly 7,500 drones gets all of the attention. The military owns 161 Predators — the iconic flying strike drone used over Pakistan, Yemen and elsewhere — and Reapers, the Predator’s bigger, better-armed brother.

But even as the military’s bought a ton of drones in the past few years, the Pentagon spends much, much more money on planes with people in them. Manned aircraft still get 92 percent of the Pentagon’s aircraft procurement money. Still, since 2001, the military has spent $26 billion on drones, the report — our Document of the Day — finds.

Don’t forget about Japan’s flying sphere drone that can fly down narrow alleys, hover on the spot, take off vertically and bounce along the ground.  These babies come courtesy of the Japanese Defense Ministry.  When a mech-revolution takes place, chances are it begins in the advanced Land of the Rising Sun.

Connect the dots and it’s fertile ground for a machine takeover.  If Siri adapts to its user like Apple claims, that means the software actually has the ability to learn and make decisions, becoming more advanced as newer models are developed.  If Siri has learning capability, then how far behind are crude emotions? One day you’ll ask your iPhone about the weather and it’ll reply “Fuck you.”  Siri knows everything about humans and our habits.  Today it’s organizing your evening, tomorrow it’s organizing your destruction.

Sometimes your enemy is the one closest to you.

Cocomi Sakura (a.k.a. Kokomi Sakura) is one of the most popular AV idols in Japan.  Her DVDs are perennial top-sellers at DMM, the motherlode of Japanese adult video.   Her career started in 2008 with a simple softcore flick, AV Impossible – Kokomi Sakura, which won an award for Best Fetish Video. Now she’s known for hardcore material, such as Fan Service Suckjob where she walks into a porn store, drops to her knees and “rewards” one lucky fan.  Cocomi is also a member of Ebisu Muscats, an idol group comprised of both gravure idols and AV stars, with an interchangeable line-up.  They have a TV variety show that airs at midnight (when the freaks come out).

Cocomi’s angelic face and well-proportioned, sylphlike body is perfect for modeling.  She did an incredibly hot photo shoot with Graphis, a softcore site with a library of nude models.  The photographer, Koji Yokoyama, did an exceptional job using creative camera angles, perfect lighting and sharp eye for composition.  Of course, Cocomi is a seductress who works the camera with her provocative poses… and she does it with an inviting smile.

This colorful photo set makes the spot look so much better, don’t ya’ think?

Cat Washington is best known for starring on junk-food “reality” TV show Bad Girls Club and I commend her for making the most of her fifteen minutes.  She upped her profile by having a fling with Drake, which lasted for a whole year and a half (an eternity in “industry time”).  She also moonlights as a recording artist but those are just footnotes to her true calling: eye candy.

There’s all types of hot chicks in the latest issue of BlackMen Magazine but the photo set with Cat Washington, shot by highly-skilled photographer Harold Huang, stands out from the pack.  Mr. Huang always does outstanding work and I dig his editing style, which improves pics rather than smother them.  Check out his versatile portfolio at HowardHuang.com.

If you’re not a radio-controlled zombie, you may know that the legendary Kool G. Rap (arguably the greatest emcee of all time) has teamed up with death-rap specialist Necro to form The Godfathers.  Their upcoming collaborative album should be the lyrical equivalent of “Lob City,” featuring a highlight reel of witty punchlines.  I’ll keep you posted with a release date.  The Godfathers have just put out The Pre-Kill, a mixtape of their classic and rare material, to whet our appetites.

This is why I’m the self-proclaimed God of Gamblers.

The provocative, bootylicious covers of John Stagliano’s Buttman Magazine have always piqued my interest. Still, there were factors that kept me from buying an issue: It costs 13 bucks, which might as well be $13K in these economic times. Not to mention that each X-rated issue is sealed in plastic, which means no browsing… and if I’m shellin’ out 13 hard-earned dollars I want to inspect what I’m paying for.

Then I saw the latest issue of Buttman with Angel Vain on the front cover, bending over in a red fishnet bodystocking. Very attractive photo. But when I flipped the magazine over and saw Briella Bounce on the back cover, the time had finally come to roll the dice. Although she’s pretty fresh in the game, Briella is one of my favorite adult-film starlets right now. She already holds a place at the top of my Porno Power Rankings™ and as her resume deepens, her standing will undoubtedly rise. Her onscreen performances have been decent so far and should only improve with time. But Ms. Bounce is a standout due to her sweet face and awesome cornbread-fed ass, complete with a signature mole on her left butt cheek. She’s a thick blond porn chick from Texas, just like Alexis. Unlike Alexis, however, Briella fucks black guys… and absolutely loves it.

Since her videos have yet to disappoint me, I took a risk and copped this issue of Buttman solely on the strength of Briella Bounce. Turns out it was a solid investment. The magazine in general is great; it’s full of high-quality photos, fiction and erotic art. Asa Akira, Rachel Roxxx, Porsha Carrera, Syndee Capri and other hotties of all races are spread throughout its pages. But Briella’s gallery, taken on the set of Buttman’s Stretch Class 8, is the highlight for me. The photographer knew exactly what poses and angles would emphasize her thickness the best. Makes me want to see the actual movie now… and I’ve never seen a flick from the Stretch Class franchise, where girls play solitaire with outrageous sex toys.

My investment in Buttman wouldn’t be truly worthwhile if I didn’t share Briella’s pics with the unquenchable Thirst Mob, so I took a smoke break and scanned a few pages. This is just a sampling of her feature; there are more photos in this set so if you like what you see, cop the magazine. For now, feast your eyes on Briella Bounce and her glaciers of ass…

Why did you become a model?

I became a model because after my first photo shoot, I developed a passion for it & knew that it was something that if I worked hard could pursue and make a career out of.

Why should a potential client book you for a shoot/project?

The fact that I work hard and take direction very well means that I’d be easy to work with. I take modeling very seriously, so any client would love my professionalism as well as my passion and love for creating awesome work.

What are some of your other interests outside of modeling?

I really love music; I’d rather listen to music than watch TV any day.  There’s always a song out there that relates to what you’re going thru or have been thru.  I also like writing… I’ve got so many journals and poems. It’s just my way of expressing my personal thoughts to myself and know it’s only going to stay between me, the pen and that journal.

What do you feel is your sexiest asset?

I feel like my curves is one of my sexiest assets. In fact I think it’s the most sexiest asset a woman can have.

What are your turn-ons?

Chocolate men, CONFIDENCE, I love dimples, & a respectful guy who knows how to treat a woman.

What are your turn-offs?

I HATE dirty finger nails, bad breath, ugly teeth & dirty shoes. All of the things I listed can be fixed and taken care of so there’s absolutely no excuse for none of it.

If you could do a shoot with one celebrity, who would it be and why?

It would probably be Tyra Banks, I say this not only because she is a model but also because I know that she would be able to give me tips & points on how to make that photo shoot & other shoots hot! I also like the fact that she is a strong black woman and a business woman as well.  Everything she has, she worked hard for it and I truly admire that.

Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?

In 5 years I hope I’ll be on the cover of magazines such as Black Men, XXL, KING, etc. I hope that I am a well-known, respected model in the industry that men and women around the world know and love!

Last time I chopped it up with veteran emcee Ill Bill, we were at the listening party for Kill Devil Hills, the album he collaborated on with DJ Muggs a year ago.  Since then, he’s kept busy: This past spring, Bill dropped the well-received Heavy Metal Kings LP with Vinnie Paz of Jedi Mind Tricks.  In October, Ill Bill released a mixtape full of recent features, rare gems and brand new material titled Howie Made Me Do It 2.

Highly-anticipated projects are on deck as well.  La Coka Nostra (the popular supergroup featuring Ill Bill, Everlast, Danny Boy, Slaine and DJ Lethal), are due to release their sophomore album, Master of the Dark Arts, in Spring 2012.  On top of all his many creative partnerships, Bill is also slated to put out a solo album next year.

As if he doesn’t have enough to do, Ill Bill fit an exclusive interview with The Spizzy into his schedule.  But as usual he was down-to-Earth, gracious with his time and thorough with his answers.  In the Q&A session posted below, Bill discussed the inspiration behind Howie Made Me Do It 2, the progress of the new La Coka Nostra joint and other informative tidbits.

Black Pacino: What inspired the cover art for Howie Made Me Do It 2? It’s really dope.

Ill Bill: When I actually got the artist to work on it, it’s kinda crazy because my uncle was really sick; he was still with us.  He passed a little over a year ago.  What happened was he was dying of cancer and the artwork itself is like a metaphor for the different demons that my uncle was fighting while he was alive.  I know you’re familiar with my music and I know you’re familiar with my uncle so… he had an addiction so he had those demons and the cancer was kinda like an unexpected thing.  Even he always said he thought if anything was gonna get it him, it was gonna be drugs.  It’s possible that the years of drug use and the heavy duty hard drugs he was doing could’ve triggered the cancer.  We don’t really know but indirectly, it wasn’t something that could be directly blamed on the drug use.

So I wanted something to kinda metaphorically reflect what he was going through.  It’s kinda crazy because the artist that was working on it, it took him a minute to get the artwork done and I got the artwork the day after my uncle passed.  I forgot about it to be honest because I had other shit on my mind, y’know what I’m sayin? He passed and the last thing I was thinking about was the artwork some dude was working on.  So it was kinda bugged out. The day after he passed, I got an email with the artwork.  And it was just an idea that I had.  A majority of what you see from me as far as any artwork, I don’t actually do it myself but 99% of what you see concept-wise, I pretty much feed the artists I work with.  It’s always dope to see an idea I had in my mind come to life.  In this case, the whole thing was symbolic.

I didn’t even know at the time I was going to use that artwork for the Howie Made Me Do It mixtape.   What happened was, it was so crazy when I got the artwork at the time… what had just happened… I just kinda put it on the back burner and left it alone for a while.  For over a year.  It’s been about a year and a half since he passed.  When it came time to rock the mixtape, it just made sense.  I called the mixtape Howie Made Me Do It 2, based on the fact that I used that artwork.  The actual concept of the demons came from a Slayer album cover; an album called Hell Awaits. If you check out that album cover, there’s these demons on the cover.  In reference to their cover, there’s a bunch of stuff going on but if you look at the actual demons, I used that as a reference.  I gave that to the artist as a reference and told him to make the demons look like the demons on the Slayer cover and he did it.  He killed it, he did a really good job.

Pacino: He damn sure did.  A lot of people now put a lot of thought into album covers… they’re more like an afterthought.  But that cover right there is really good.  It stands alone as a piece of art.

Bill: Thanks, man.  Glad you like it.  I love it.  Yeah, I’m into album artwork.  I’m a record collector so I’m not really too excited about the demise of vinyl, because you can’t showcase the artwork the way vinyl does, or a CD cover or whatever.  So I’ve always been a fan of that and y’know it’s like, it’s more of a Hip-Hop thing to use just photographs and stuff for covers.  I’ve done that on a couple of mixtapes but for the most part, especially with albums, I like to do artwork.  It has more of a flavor to it.  I’m a comic book fan too.

Pacino: You got a joint on Howie 2 with Just-Ice, the original Hip-Hop gangster.  How’d you hook up with him?

Bill: That’s the homie.  We met through DJ Eclipse, he introduced us.  I’m a big Just-Ice fan so we just clicked when we met.  We’ve got similar interests and similar sense of humor and we just kicked it.  Whenever I do a show in New York, he always comes through and we just yap it up and what not.  That song was actually for his album.  It came out like two years ago.  Our styles are a little bit different so we share different fans.  So I wasn’t sure how many of my fans had actually picked up on his records, so I put it on my joint.  I have a lot of different features; a majority of my mixtapes are like that.  What does a mixtape even mean at this point, na’mean? To me, it’s more or less my favorite collabos that I’ve done in the last year… within the year since I dropped my last mixtape. I always holla at everybody and just get their blessing before I put it on the mixtape. Every time I reached out it’s love.  I look at it as if the shoe is on the other foot.  It’s just more exposure, more of a chance of more people hearing it.  That’s what happened, not just with that joint but a lot of joints that came out on other people’s albums.  Some people hear it for the first time, it’s a beautiful thing.  So the younger kids who might not be up on Just-Ice, it’s a good look because they’ll be able to check him out.

Pacino: Lyrically, you ain’t fell off over the years.  You drop a lot of material, plus you run a record label, handle merchandising and stuff.  With so much happening, how do you stay so sharp?

Bill: I just love writing.  I enjoy it.  Everybody has one talent, one thing that they focus on.   I’ve always been a writer.  When I was in 2^nd grade, 3^rd grade, I used to write book reports.  I used to be assigned to do a book report and just blow it off and not even read the book.  And the day before the assignment was due I would write the whole book report and make up the whole book in my head.  Make up the writer’s name… I would combine a comic book artist’s and a comic book writer’s first name and last name and make the writer’s name up.  I would just make up a story.  And they’re like, “Yo, we wanna see the book” and I’m like, “Oh, I forgot it.”  Blow them off and get an A+.  I just always was a writer, it’s just natural.

Pacino: What’s poppin with La Coka Nostra’s next album, Master of the Dark Arts? How’s that coming along?

Bill: That’s the next record coming out that I’m involved with and it’s coming along crazy, man.  Lethal just hit us with a folder of beats.  We haven’t heard beats from him in a while.  He’s one my favorite producers… he slept-on, he doesn’t get the recognition he deserves but I think he’s a great producer.  We’ve sitting on a bunch of beats.  I’ve done some production for the record.  C-Lance has done some production for the record so far.  Jack of All Trades, who did some joints on the Heavy Metal Kings record, he’s done one so far that we’ve rocked.  Got a couple more in the chamber.

We’ve waited a while to get into recording this record because everybody’s so busy individually.  It presented itself opportunity-wise to be able to work on this record and put it out in the time frame.  We have to make moves based off of different schedules, being that we’re all real busy.  Slaine might have become the busiest dude in the group in the past couple of years… especially him with the movie work he’s doing.  So we had to jump on it.  So basically me and Slaine have pretty much been in the studio kind of spearheading everything.  We’ve been putting in the work so far, going in.  I’m excited because I already got two beats on the record, which is like, a beat and a half more than the last album.

Yeah, man… we’re like 7 songs deep at this point.  We’re just working fast, we’re inspired.  It’s gonna be done soon.  It’ll be done in the next 3 months.  Pretty much, I have about 3 months to get it done for Spring; how we say and how we’ve been planning.  We want to bring it on in May and there’s a chance it might come out in June.  I don’t see it going past June.  If it takes us til March then we won’t be able to… there’s a 3 month turnaround.  We have a blueprint for records.  I don’t want to get too much in to the concept of the record because it’s too early right now to really talk about it.  Danny Boy is like the RZA of La Coka Nosta.  He laid out where he wanted to go with this record before we even recorded the first song.  So there’s a concept to the record; even more of a concept to this record than the last one.  So I think that’s making us flow a little better as far as us getting it done within a quicker timeframe.

I’m used to spending 3 years on a record, na’mean? Up until recent times (I’d spend) 3 to 4 years on a record.  And that’s cool to a point but at the same time we’re in a different era of making music and doing this right.  You take 3 years to put out a record, you’ll be forgotten.  It’s different now.  Cats used to take 4 years to put out a record and I respect the quality of it and I understand because I used to do the same thing but it just can’t operate like that nowadays.  It just doesn’t work.  My next solo record, I’ve been working on it for the last 6 & ½ to 7 months.  It’s also a concept record and I’m shocked at how quickly it’s coming together.

Pacino: You’re a big rock fan.  Any theories as to why rock artists are allowed to have longer careers than rappers? Some people make a big deal about age in rap.

Bill: Ultimately it’s up to the fans.  The fans put you where you’re at and they decide; it’s the people’s choice.  I think that the Hip-Hop audience is increasing a young audience.  Not as much as when it first started because the President is a Hip-Hop head and there’s still older heads that still get on the train.  Everybody… you’ve got doctors (who are) Hip-Hop heads.  But for the most part, it’s a young fan base.  It’s also cutting edge music; for lack of a better word it’s the coolest, the hippest music there is.  And I think that’s a double-edged sword.  It works against a veteran artist, where a veteran artist is considered played out.  Like, “That’s old.”

It’s not like that with rock music, the way people put music on the internet with the mixtapes and the whole culture.  It’s crazy because it kind of started in a way, because it’s a combination of the internet, I think… and also when DMX was coming out with 2 albums a year.  And Jay-Z, they kinda set it off.  Especially DMX; he was putting out 2 albums a year, selling like 8 million.  He did that for like three years straight and Jay-Z was consistent every year.  That inspired me.  Even if I didn’t put out what could be considered an album, I put out a mixtape.  Since 2002, going on about to be 10 years later, every year I dropped at least one CD.  I think that’s part of why you’re even interested in interviewing me right now and why I can actually compete in a world of way younger artists than me.  I’m the same age as Eminem… a year or two younger than Jay-Z.  I’m more from that era.  But then you’ve got A$AP Rocky and them dudes is like 20 years old.

For me, I don’t dwell on it, it is what it is.  I don’t really got time for that.  Dudes like the Rolling Stones are in their 60’s, man.  But are they gonna let a 60-year old rapper live? I don’t know, man (laughs).  Could be a positive or a negative.  On some Frank Sinatra shit, na’mean? I don’t know, let’s see.  That’s what crazy about it; Hip-Hop is still like the youngest (musical genre).  Then again, not really… now you other newer things, like the Dubstep movement is coming up and all that.  That’s new.  It’s like a cousin of Hip-Hop.  But for me, what I grew up on, Hip-Hop is the youngest musical genre.  It’s kinda like a gift and a curse in Hip-Hop, because Hip-Hop is so fast and ahead of the curve.  It’s that cool factor. Like, “That muthafucka’s old, check out this new shit.”  That’s part of Hip-Hop, that’s a Hip-Hop attitude.  It’s not really like that as much in rock.  Hipster muthafuckas, they be on that type of shit but to me, they bit that off of Hip-Hop.  So it’s whatever.

First things first: Bethany St. James is not a porn star.  Although she grew up surrounded by the adult entertainment industry (her mother was an adult film actress and her father owned a dozen gentleman’s clubs), you won’t find Bethany talking dirty on Spankwire.  However, she can be found at Sheri’s Ranch in Las Vegas, Nevada… a resort, spa and legal brothel rolled into a 33-acre, Playboy mansion-style compound.  Bethany is one of the many beautiful, exotic women who work at the brothel, fulfilling the sexual fantasies of its patrons.

Another place where Bethany St. James can be found is the Huffington Post, where she is now a featured columnist.  The prestigious news site has given St. James a forum to explain and discuss her brand of politics, with articles such as Priests & Porn Addiciton and Sasha Grey-A Porn Star Dares To Read.

Bethany is a strong advocate for legalizing brothels in the United States.  She has researched the ins and outs of legalized prostitution, both the benefits and pitfalls, so she comes to the table well-armed with knowledge.  I tend to agree with her… I don’t know why it’s illegal to pay for something that’s perfectly legal to give away for free. In an attempt to educate the public on her heart-felt cause, Bethany has been spreading her gospel at a wide range of venues.  Today, she visits The Spizzy for a very intriguing interview where she goes into detail on her views.

With her cordial demeanor and sweet voice dripping Southern honey, I found Bethany St. James to be very charismatic… she’s easy to converse with.  Our Q&A is posted below and it’s very engaging, so have a peek.

Black Pacino: The United States is supposed to be an advanced nation at the forefront of the world.  Why do you think this country is so backwards when it comes to sex and sexuality? We seem a little behind with that.

Bethany St. James: Yeah, we’re definitely behind.  There’s so many other countries that have legalized brothels and welcome sexuality into their culture and understand it.  I wish I knew why Americans were so repressed as far as their sexuality goes.  It’s amazing how much violence we allow on television yet we completely suppress our sexuality.  The only reason I can possibly come up with is that we haven’t been educated.  We haven’t had a role model for healthy sexuality.  When people think of sex they automatically think of porn and the unhealthy… not that porn is unhealthy but in their minds hey think it’s an unhealthy thing.  You’ve had some unhealthy imagery.  I think that basically we need more people, more educated women & men, to help people to understand real human sexuality, the need for it and the part that it plays in society.  I think those things will change with time; we just need some good healthy people to speak their mind in an educated, rational manner.

Pacino: One of your stances is that you want to decriminalize prostitution, for lack of a better term, which I agree with.  Why do you think prostitution, or rather brothels, should be legalized in the United States?

Bethany: Actually… and I hate to correct you… but I absolutely oppose decriminalization across the board of prostitution.  That’s very important to mention.  I don’t think it should be just legalized; that is a complete disaster waiting to happen.  Our STD rate and unwanted pregnancy and our economy and all these sorts of things would just plummet worse than they are now.  I think that legalized, regulated, federally and state-mandated brothels are the only way that legal prostitution can work.  And the reason I feel so strongly about that is because you’re able to tax the houses; you’re able to control it in a healthy and safe environment.  It’s important to mention there has not been a reported case of an STD coming in or out of a Nevada brothel since 1986.  That’s huge.  Also the girls are tested once a week.  If you don’t go to the doctor, you don’t work period.  If you don’t complete your testing you don’t work.  So that’s important to mention.

Also, people don’t really seem to realize the economic benefits that legalizing regulated brothels provide.  Now that you’re in a taxed setting, you can allocate those tax dollars for much better purposes… for educational programs, for community programs, all sorts of different things to benefit the community.  Also, it provides jobs.  We’re not just talking about the working girl; I’m talking about janitorial staff, people that answer the phone.  There’s so many behind-the-scenes positions, no pun intended (laughs) that go on when you’re talking about a legalized brothels.  So those are a few, just to breeze over a few of the reasons.  I think once people understand that it’s going to clean up a lot of the street crime; it’s going to alleviate so much of the sex trafficking problems and illegal prostitution.  It’s going to allow our police officers, law enforcement and judicial system to focus on bigger issues.  So yeah, there’s my long-winded answer (laughs).  I have to stop myself, I’m sorry.

Pacino: (Laughs) That’s fine, be thorough.  Have you been doing anything personally to implement change in the sex business?

Bethany: Well, my first and foremost thing… the first part of the big piece of the pie that I’m trying to tackle is education, like I said.  I think some of these people try to start at the top and work their way down.  They go straight to trying to change laws.  You don’t have any people behind you because you haven’t taken the time to educate them.  So that’s kind of where I’m starting… from the bottom and working my way to the top.  I’m trying to educate and help people understand what it is I’m talking about and that legalizing prostitution is a multi-faceted issue.  It’s not black and white.  So I’m starting there and the Huffington Post has been an amazing way for me to that.  I’m getting so many emails every day from people saying that they really just had no idea what this was all about.  They had seen that stupid show that’s on television [editor’s note: I assume Bethany is talking about HBO’s Cathouse] and they thought that’s what legalized brothels were like, whereas it’s not.  It’s a TV show. I always say it’s about as realistic as Jersey Shore or any of those other shows.  It’s made-for-television drama.  So that’s where I’m starting at, just to kind of clean up the mess that things like that have created so that people can better understand the reality of it.  Once I get more people understanding what I’m talking about, then we can go on to tackle the world and change the laws (laughs).

Pacino: I know you can’t mention names of specific people because it’s confidential but what kind of clientele comes out to Sheri’s Ranch? Whenever folks think about the type of people that patronize brothels or watch porn, they have a certain profile in their mind.

Bethany: Well that’s the thing I think that blows everybody’s mind.  They expect it to be either wealthy CEOs of companies or other people think that it’s just street urchins… you know, people that just can’t have sex on their own.  And they couldn’t be more wrong.  The people that pay for sex are CEOs of companies who need that sort of anonymity and that sort of thing but there are also people from all different walks of life.  Everybody.  People don’t pay for sex just because they can’t have sex or because it’s a dirty thing.  Sometimes they just aren’t getting their needs met.  They love their spouse more than anything in the world and maybe because of illness or lack of sex drive or something like that.  Or time.  They just don’t have a healthy sex life with their partners.  They have no inclination to leave their spouse, they just need something.  Then they can go home and be a good husband or a good wife and have that need met.

A lot of couples come in to Sheri’s.  Reason being, you live in a small town, it’s not easy to go and find you want to experiment with.  There’s a lot of drama that goes along with that sort of thing.  “Is it a friend? Am I going to talk to her the next day? Are they developing feelings for one another?” All these different types of things.  So it provides a healthy, safe place for them to go.  They can go and experiment and see if that’s something they want to explore in their marriage.  They go home but then they like the experience and I stay here (laughs).  So there’s all different types of reasons that people come to a brothel.  It’s a safe, healthy way to act out a fantasy or try something that you may want to go home and try with your partner.  I always say people don’t pay for the sex, they pay for us to not to call them the next day (laughs). They pay for us to leave.

Pacino: The easy way out.

Bethany: Absolutely (laughs).  I mean, don’t get me wrong.  We have plenty of gentlemen, ladies and couples that do get enamored and we do have a bit of a relationship with them.  We get to know them as far as seeing pictures of their homes, friends and families.  And they come back and see us on a regular basis but it stays here.  So it’s nice to know that there’s always waiting for you.

Pacino: If the brothels become legalized it’s gonna put a lot of pimps out of work.    You’ve heard the song: “It’s hard out here for a pimp.”   You’re not concerned about those guys?

Bethany: Not in the least (laughs).  No.  They might actually become productive members of society instead of trying to be a scourge on it.  So no, I have absolutely no respect for any man that takes that as his profession and I have heard people say, “Well, isn’t that essentially what a brothel is?” Absolutely not.  No, there’s a completely different mindset here.  Brothels empower women for the most part.  I of course have some feelings about some people in this business.  I’m not always going to agree with everyone’s politics and way of doing things.  But for the most part, brothels empower women.  They don’t want you to stay here forever, they want you to make money and be a healthy productive member of society and take care of your family… whatever it is your goals are.  And when you’re talking about a pimp, that’s someone that just runs someone’s self-esteem into the ground and takes control of their lives.  There’s no healthy way out of that situation so no, I could really care less (laughs).

Pacino: Fur coat and Cadillac sales will decrease.

Bethany: Exactly.  You can take the bus now, pal.  It’s fine (laughs).

Pacino: You don’t do porn… but do you watch porn?

Bethany: Well, not so much.  I watch older porn and other people that have interviewed me have kind of laughed at me in a cute way.  But modern porn doesn’t do a thing for me.  I like to have a little bit of a storyline.  Things were a lot safer back then, as far as STDs and things like that.  So when I watch it, it makes me feel better to know that this was shot back in the 70’s and that they were all safe (laughs).  Modern-day porn I just think it’s so tacky.  No offense to any of my friends that are in that industry, I have a lot of them.  And my mother was in that industry way back when.  Yeah, but it’s just tacky, it’s not sexy to me.  It doesn’t do anything for me.  So yeah, I do watch porn but older porn like sexy, Nina Hartley and things like that.

Pacino: You mentioned that your mother was in the porn industry and from what I know your father was also involved, more on the business end.  So did your parents ever want you to be involved in the line of work that you’re in? Or did they have other plans and things they wanted you to do?

Bethany: It’s ironic because I have a big slew of brothers and sisters and I’m the only one actually that’s in the industry.  They’re all college-educated, very professional people, they have their own lives.    My parents let us choose.  We were raised in a household where we were taught sex was not bad.  But, with that came a lot of responsibilities.  So you would picture my household being like we’d have boyfriends over to spend the night and things like that… and that wasn’t the truth because they instilled in us that you can have sex when you’re ready.  It’s a big responsibility and you have to be ready for the consequences that come with it.  So they never really pushed us into the industry or anything like that, we saw it for what it was.  It was just like anybody else’s parents going to work.  So they just let us make our own choices.  They were very open with us and talked about things in a very logical manner and helped us understand it.  So it was never as glamorous as everyone would think it is, growing up in an industry household.  It was just a regular day for us.

Pacino: While we’re on the topic of de-criminalization, let’s talk about something that’s dear to my heart: marijuana.  I know this is kind of off-the-topic but what are your thoughts on marijuana legalization?

Bethany: For this Presidential election year I’m definitely supporting Gary Johnson… that is part of his platform, legalizing marijuana.  I definitely think it should be legalized.  I don’t see where the harm is.  You don’t have people driving off cliffs whereas you do with alcohol, so in my mind I really don’t understand why alcohol is legal and marijuana is not.  The worse thing that’s going to happen when someone gets high is that they’re going to fall asleep on the couch.  So there’s really no harm done.  I personally don’t smoke marijuana because it always puts me asleep and I don’t see the point.  But I know lots of people that do and I don’t see the harm in it.

So yeah, absolutely… I think people with glaucoma and cancer and arthritis and all different types of ailments, I can completely see the benefits.  Taxing it as well, what’s the harm? The only thing that can possibly happen is that the communities get a little bit more tax money and people that are hurting and don’t feel well can feel better.  I think that cigarettes and alcohol and things like that are legal, so why not marijuana?  We’re not talking about a hard drug here that makes people go out and commit crimes.  Joking of course, but people that smoke pot are too lazy to rob somebody (laughs).  That requires far too much effort.

Pacino: Have you ever thought of running for political office? You’re very charismatic.

Bethany: Well, thank you.  Like I said, I’m starting with education… who knows what the future holds as far as that goes?

Pacino: Let’s get personal.  What turns on Bethany St. James?

Bethany: Oh wow.  OK, I’ll give you the not-so-sexy answer and then I’ll give you the real sexy answer.  The biggest turn-on for me, it’s not about body type or anything like that.  It’s not a tanned man with muscles, that doesn’t really do anything for me.  I enjoy somebody who’s open with their sexuality and can tell me what it is that they like and isn’t ashamed of that, no matter what it is.  I’m willing to try just about anything but you have to talk me first and tell me what it is that excites you.

Now the sexier answer… blindfolds, I enjoy submission.  That’s my very favorite thing in the whole; just to completely let myself go.  I did a party here once that was just amazingly erotic.  I was blindfolded and I had earphones in, so I couldn’t hear anything. All of my senses were completely shut down and other ones were just completely open and tingly and exciting.  Yeah, I guess sensory-deprivation and submission are the things that really excite me.

Pacino: On the other hand, what turns off Bethany St. James?

Bethany: My biggest turn off in the entire world is when someone is rude. I don’t want to get off on this whole thing but I think that’s one disservice that porn has done to the sensuality and sexuality, modern day.  It’s not all about “fuck me in the ass” and profanity and just being tacky.  The biggest turn-off to me is that kind of (stuff).  I mean… it has its place, don’t get me wrong.  But just all the time, just being degrading and that kind of thing.  I like to be touched like a woman and appreciated.  You know, there’s something to be said for just being a sensual, sexy man and knowing what a woman wants, kind of like a Barry White/Teddy Pendergrass sort of thing (laughs).  And then my turn-offs would be y’know… there’s a time and place for talking dirty but it doesn’t always have to be that way.  That’s my biggest turn-off.  That and hygiene.   You should smell good.

Pacino: What might your fans be surprised to know about you?

Bethany: That I am such a nerd (laughs).  I have collections of little things.  I have interesting animal slippers.  My favorite animal is lemurs; I collect anything lemurs.  They’d probably be surprised to learn I have some odd habits.  I have everything from lemur mittens to… yeah, it’s ridiculous.  I’m very silly; I take very seriously about myself.

Pacino: Any final thoughts, projects or endeavors you’d like to let my viewers know about?

Bethany: I definitely want to let them know about the not-for-profit that I’m starting.  I’m trying vigorously to get the Federal OK to get this going.  It would be a not-for-profit to benefit all sex workers, everybody in the adult entertainment industry, to have someone to talk to about dreams and aspirations that they may have.  And us being able to help them to make those happen, whether it be through helping them understand their finances a little bit better, or even just simple things like opening a bank account.  Unfortunately the business can be very hard on the self-esteems because of outside influences and things like that, so I’d like to provide people with a place to come and get the help they need.  So that’s what’s going on, I’m starting a not-for-profit.  I’m also going to be starting a sex & love advice column on my website.  So people can write me questions that they may have, whether they’re married, single, in an alternative lifestyle, whatever it is… and I’ll be happy to give them my thoughts.

When people think of Playboy Magazine they automatically think of sex, drugs and naked busty bunnies; a preconceived notion most definitely earned.  Still, Playboy is also one of the best and most innovative magazines in the history of journalism.  In fact, some of the all-time greatest interviews were published in its pages, hence the book set The Playboy Interviews.  Each thick hardcover is broken down by category: Movers & Shakers, The Comedians, The Directors, Larger Than Life and They Played The Game.  The archives include in-depth Q&A sessions with the likes of Jim Brown, Joe Namath, Billie Jean King, O. J. Simpson, Vince McMahon, Michael Jordan, Allen Iverson, Barry Bonds, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Mike Tyson, to name a few.

On the surface, the oddest pairing of Playboy and interviewee would be in 1963, when revered black activist Malcolm X graced its pages.  At that point, Brother Malcolm was at his most militant, goin’ hard with the Nation of Islam’s gospel.  Then again, Playboy was always a cut above other magazines when it came to race relations.  They selected the first black Playmate of the Month in March 1965, during the height of the Civil Rights Movement.  The first Playboy interview ever was done by the legendary Alex Haley, African-American author of Roots and The Autobiography of Malcolm X.  The seeds were planted for the autobiography during  Malcolm’s interview, which was conducted by Haley.  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. also did an interview with Playboy in 1965, the year Malcolm X was assassinated.

I want this Malcolm X interview at The Spizzy because it proves that a publication best known for T&A can also produce informative and phenomenal journalism.  Its posted here in its entirety.  A shining example of why we shouldn’t always judge a book by its cover.

Within the past five years, the militant American Negro has become an increasingly active combatant in the struggle for civil rights. Espousing the goals of unqualified equality and integration, many of these outspoken insurgents have participated in freedom rides and protest marches against their segregationist foes. Today, they face opposition from not one, but two inimical exponents of racism and segregation: the white supremacists and the Black Muslims. A relatively unknown and insignificant radical religious Negro cult until a few years ago, the Muslims have grown into a dedicated, disciplined nationwide movement which runs its own school, publishes its own newspaper, owns stores and restaurants in four major cities, buys broadcast time on 50 radio stations throughout the country, stages mass rallies attended by partisan crowds of 10,000 and more, and maintains its own police force of judo-trained athletes called the Fruit of Islam.

Predicated on the proposition that the black man is morally, spiritually and intellectually superior to the white man, who is called a “devil,” Muslim doctrine dooms him to extermination in an imminent Armageddon–along with Christianity itself, which is denounced as an opiate designed to lull Negroes–with the promise of heaven–into passive acceptance of inferior social status. Amalgamating elements of Christianity and Mohammedanism (both of which officially and unequivocally disown it) and spiked with a black-supremacy version of Hitler’s Aryan racial theories, Muslimism was founded in 1931 by Elijah Poole, a Georgia-born ex-factory worker who today commands unquestioning obedience from thousands of followers as the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, Messenger of Allah. At the right hand of God’s Messenger stands 36-year-old Malcolm Little, a lanky onetime dining-car steward, bootlegger, pimp and dope pusher who left prison in 1952 to heed Muhammad’s message, abandoned his “slave name,” Little, for the symbolic “X” (meaning identity unknown), and took an oath to abstain thereafter from smoking, drinking, gambling, cursing, dancing and sexual promiscuity–as required of every Muslim. The ambitious young man rose swiftly to become the Messenger’s most ardent and erudite disciple, and today wields all but absolute authority over the movement and its membership as Muhammad’s business manager, trouble shooter, prime minister and heir apparent.

In the belief that knowledge and awareness are necessary and effective antitoxins against the venom of hate, PLAYBOY asked Malcolm X to submit to a cross-examination on the means and ends of his organization. The ensuing interview was conducted at a secluded table in a Harlem restaurant owned by the Muslims. Interrupting his replies occasionally with a sip of black African coffee and whispered asides to deferential aides, the dark-suited minister of Harlem’s Muslim Temple Number Seven spoke with candor and–except for moments of impassioned execration of all whites–the impersonal tone of a self-assured corporation executive.

Many will be shocked by what he has to say; others will be outraged. Our own view is that this interview is both an eloquent statement and a damning self-indictment of one noxious facet of rampant racism. As such, we believe it merits publication–and reading.

PLAYBOY: What is the ambition of the Black Muslims?

MALCOLM X: Freedom, justice and equality are our principal ambitions. And to faithfully serve and follow the Honorable Elijah Muhammad is the guiding goal of every Muslim. Mr. Muhammad teaches us the knowledge of our own selves, and of our own people. He cleans us up–morally, mentally and spiritually–and he reforms us of the vices that have blinded us here in the Western society. He stops black men from getting drunk, stops their dope addiction if they had it, stops nicotine, gambling, stealing, lying, cheating, fornication, adultery, prostitution, juvenile delinquency. I think of this whenever somebody talks about someone investigating us. Why investigate the Honorable Elijah Muhammad? They should subsidize him. He’s cleaning up the mess that white men have made. He’s saving the Government millions of dollars, taking black men off of welfare, showing them how to do something for themselves. And Mr. Muhammad teaches us love for our own kind. The white man has taught the black people in this country to hate themselves as inferior, to hate each other, to be divided against each other. Messenger Muhammad restores our love for our own kind, which enables us to work together in unity and harmony. He shows us how to pool our financial resources and our talents, then to work together toward a common objective. Among other things, we have small businesses in most major cities in this country, and we want to create many more. We are taught by Mr. Muhammad that it is very important to improve the black man’s economy, and his thrift. But to do this, we must have land of our own. The brainwashed black man can never learn to stand on his own two feet until he is on his own. We must learn to become our own producers, manufacturers and traders; we must have industry of our own, to employ our own. The white man resists this because he wants to keep the black man under his thumb and jurisdiction in white society. He wants to keep the black man always dependent and begging–for jobs, food, clothes, shelter, education. The white man doesn’t want to lose somebody to be supreme over. He wants to keep the black man where he can be watched and retarded. Mr. Muhammad teaches that as soon as we separate from the white man, we will learn that we can do without the white man just as he can do without us. The white man knows that once black men get off to themselves and learn they can do for themselves, the black man’s full potential will explode and he will surpass the white man.

PLAYBOY: Do you feel that the Black Muslims’ goal of obtaining “several states” is a practical vision?

MALCOLM X: Well, you might consider some things practical that are really impractical. Wasn’t it impractical that the Supreme Court could issue a desegregation order nine years ago and there’s still only eight percent compliance? Is it practical that a hundred years after the Civil War there’s not freedom for black men yet? On the record for integration you’ve got the President, the Congress, the Supreme Court–but show me your integration, where is it? That’s practical? Mr. Muhammad teaches us to be for what’s really practical–that’s separation. It’s more natural than integration.

PLAYBOY: In a recent interview, Negro author-lecturer Louis Lomax said, “Eighty percent, if not more, of America’s 20,000,000 Negroes vibrate sympathetically with the Muslims’ indictment of the white power structure. But this does not mean we agree with them in their doctrines of estrangement or with their proposed resolutions of the race problem.” Does this view represent a consensus of opinion among Negroes? And if so, is it possible that your separationist and anti-Christian doctrines have the effect of alienating many of your own race?

MALCOLM X: Sir, you make a mistake listening to people who tell you how much our stand alienates black men in this country. I’d guess actually we have the sympathy of 90 percent of the black people. There are 20,000,000 dormant Muslims in America. A Muslim to us is somebody who is for the black man; I don’t care if he goes to the Baptist Church seven days a week. The Honorable Elijah Muhammad says that a black man is born a Muslim by nature. There are millions of Muslims not aware of it now. All of them will be Muslims when they wake up; that’s what’s meant by the Resurrection. Sir, I’m going to tell you a secret: the black man is a whole lot smarter than white people think he is. The black man has survived in this country by fooling the white man. He’s been dancing and grinning and white men never guessed what he was thinking. Now you’ll hear the bourgeois Negroes pretending to be alienated, but they’re just making the white man think they don’t go for what Mr. Muhammad is saying. This Negro that will tell you he’s so against us, he’s just protecting the crumbs he gets from the white man’s table. This kind of Negro is so busy trying to be like the white man that he doesn’t know what the real masses of his own people are thinking. A fine car and house and clothes and liquor have made a lot think themselves different from their poor black brothers. But Mr. Muhammad says that Allah is going to wake up all black men to see the white man as he really is, and see what Christianity has done to them. The black masses that are waking up don’t believe in Christianity anymore. All it’s done for black men is help to keep them slaves. Mr. Muhammad is teaching that Christianity, as white people see it, means that whites can have their heaven here on earth, but the black man is supposed to catch his hell here. The black man is supposed to keep believing that when he dies, he’ll float up to some city with golden streets and milk and honey on a cloud somewhere. Every black man in North America has heard black Christian preachers shouting about “tomorrow in good old Beulah’s Land.” But the thinking black masses today are interested in Muhammad’s Land. The Promised Land that the Honorable Elijah Muhammad talks about is right here on this earth. Intelligent black men today are interested in a religious doctrine that offers a solution to their problems right now, right here on this earth, while they are alive. You must understand that the Honorable Elijah Muhammad represents the fulfillment of Biblical prophecy to us. In the Old Testament, Moses lived to see his enemy, Pharaoh, drowned in the Red Sea–which in essence means that Mr. Muhammad will see the completion of his work in his lifetime, that he will live to see victory gained over his enemy.

PLAYBOY: Are you referring to the Muslim judgment day which your organization’s newspaper, MUHAMMAD SPEAKS, calls “Armageddon” and prophesies as imminent?

MALCOLM X: Armageddon deals with the final battle between God and the Devil. The Third World War is referred to as Armageddon by many white statesmen. There won’t be any more war after then because there won’t be any more warmongers. I don’t know when Armageddon, whatever form it takes, is supposed to be. But I know the time is near when the white man will be finished. The signs are all around us. Ten years ago you couldn’t have paid a Southern Negro to defy local customs. The British Lion’s tail has been snatched off in black Africa. The Indonesians have booted out such would-be imperialists as the Dutch. The French, who felt for a century that Algeria was theirs, have had to run for their lives back to France. Sir, the point I make is that all over the world, the old day of standing in fear and trembling before the almighty white man is gone!

PLAYBOY: If Muslims ultimately gain control as you predict, what do you plan to do with white people?

MALCOLM X: It’s not a case of what would we do, it’s a case of what would God do with whites. What does a judge do with the guilty? Either the guilty one repents and atones, or God executes judgment.

PLAYBOY: You refer to whites as “the guilty” and “the enemy”; you predict divine retribution against them; and you preach absolute separation from the white community. Do not these views substantiate the fact that your movement is predicated on race hatred?

MALCOLM X: Sir, it’s from Mr. Muhammad that the black masses are learning for the first time in 400 years the real truth of how the white man brainwashed the black man, kept him ignorant of his true history, robbed him of his self-confidence. The black masses for the first time are understanding that it’s not a case of being anti-white or anti-Christian, but it’s a case of seeing the true nature of the white man. We’re anti-evil, anti-oppression, anti-lynching. You can’t be anti-those things unless you’re also anti-the oppressor and the lyncher. You can’t be anti-slavery and pro-slavemaster; you can’t be anti-crime and pro-criminal. In fact, Mr. Muhammad teaches that if the present generation of whites would study their own race in the light of their true history, they would be anti-white themselves.

PLAYBOY: Are you?

MALCOLM X: As soon as the white man hears a black man say that he’s through loving white people, then the white man accuses the black man of hating him. The Honorable Elijah Muhammad doesn’t teach hate. The white man isn’t important enough for the Honorable Elijah Muhammad and his followers to spend any time hating him. The white man has brainwashed himself into believing that all the black people in the world want to be cuddled up next to him. When he meets what we’re talking about, he can’t believe it, it takes all the wind out of him. When we tell him we don’t want to be around him, we don’t want to be like he is, he’s staggered. It makes him re-evaluate his 300-year myth about the black man. What I want to know is how the white man, with the blood of black people dripping off his fingers, can have the audacity to be asking black people do they hate him. That takes a lot of nerve.

PLAYBOY: How do you reconcile your disavowal of hatred with the announcement you made last year that Allah had brought you “the good news” that 120 white Atlantans had just been killed in an air crash en route to America from Paris?

MALCOLM X: Sir, as I see the law of justice, it says as you sow, so shall you reap. The white man has reveled as the rope snapped black men’s necks. He has reveled around the lynching fire. It’s only right for the black man’s true God, Allah, to defend us–and for us to be joyous because our God manifests his ability to inflict pain on our enemy. We Muslims believe that the white race, which is guilty of having oppressed and exploited and enslaved our people here in America, should and will be the victims of God’s divine wrath. All civilized societies in their courts of justice set a sentence of execution against those deemed to be enemies of society, such as murderers and kidnappers. The presence of 20,000,000 black people here in America is proof that Uncle Sam is guilty of kidnapping–because we didn’t come here voluntarily on the Mayflower. And 400 years of lynchings condemn Uncle Sam as a murderer.

PLAYBOY: To return to your statement about the plane crash, when Dr. Ralph Bunche heard about it, he called you “mentally depraved.” What is your reaction?

MALCOLM X: I know all about what Dr. Bunche said. He’s always got his international mouth open. He apologized in the UN when black people protested there. You’ll notice that whenever the white man lets a black man get prominent, he has a job for him. Dr. Bunche serves the white man well–he represents, speaks for and defends the white man. He does none of this for the black man. Dr. Bunche has functioned as a white man’s tool, designed to influence international opinion on the Negro. The white man has Negro local tools, national tools, and Dr. Bunche is an international tool.

PLAYBOY: Dr. Bunche was only one of many prominent Negroes who deplored your statement in similar terms. What reply have you to make to these spokesmen for your own people?

MALCOLM X: Go ask their opinions and you’ll be able to fill your notebook with what white people want to hear Negroes say. Let’s take these so-called spokesmen for the black men by types. Start with the politicians. They never attack Mr. Muhammad personally. They realize he has the sympathy of the black masses. They know they would alienate the masses whose votes they need. But the black civic leaders, they do attack Mr. Muhammad. The reason is usually that they are appointed to their positions by the white man. The white man pays them to attack us. The ones who attack Mr. Muhammad the most are the ones who earn the most. Then take the black religious leaders, they also attack Mr. Muhammad. These preachers do it out of self-defense, because they know he’s waking up Negroes. No one believes what the Negro preacher preaches except those who are mentally asleep, or in the darkness of ignorance about the true situation of the black man here today in this wilderness of North America. If you will take note, sir, many so-called Negro leaders who once attacked the Honorable Elijah Muhammad don’t do so anymore. And he never speaks against them in the personal sense except as a reaction if they speak against him. Islam is a religion that teaches us never to attack, never to be the aggressor–but you can waste somebody if he attacks you. These Negro leaders have become aware that whenever the Honorable Elijah Muhammad is caused by their attack to level his guns against them, they always come out on the losing end. Many have experienced this.

PLAYBOY: Do you admire and respect any other American Negro leaders–Martin Luther King, for example?

MALCOLM X: I am a Muslim, sir. Muslims can see only one leader who has the qualifications necessary to unite all elements of black people in America. This is the Honorable Elijah Muhammad.

PLAYBOY: Many white religious leaders have also gone on record against the Black Muslims. Writing in the official NAACP magazine, a Catholic priest described you as “a fascist-minded hate group,” and B’nai B’rith has accused you of being not only anti-Christian but anti-Semitic. Do you consider this true?

MALCOLM X: Insofar as the Christian world is concerned, dictatorships have existed only in areas or countries where you have Roman Catholicism. Catholicism conditions your mind for dictators. Can you think of a single Protestant country that has ever produced a dictator?

PLAYBOY: Germany was predominantly Protestant when Hitler –

MALCOLM X: Another thing to think of–in the 20th Century, the Christian Church has given us two heresies: fascism and communism. Where did fascism start? Where’s the second-largest Communist party outside of Russia? The answer to both is Italy. Where is the Vatican? But let’s not forget the Jew. Anybody that gives even a just criticism of the Jew is instantly labeled anti-Semite. The Jew cries louder than anybody else if anybody criticizes him. You can tell the truth about any minority in America, but make a true observation about the Jew, and if it doesn’t pat him on the back, then he uses his grip on the news media to label you anti-Semite. Let me say just a word about the Jew and the black man. The Jew is always anxious to advise the black man. But they never advise him how to solve his problem the way the Jews solved their problem. The Jew never went sitting-in and crawling-in and sliding-in and freedom-riding, like he teaches and helps Negroes to do. The Jews stood up, and stood together, and they used their ultimate power, the economic weapon. That’s exactly what the Honorable Elijah Muhammad is trying to teach black men to do. The Jews pooled their money and bought the hotels that barred them. They bought Atlantic City and Miami Beach and anything else they wanted. Who owns Hollywood? Who runs the garment industry, the largest industry in New York City? But the Jew that’s advising the Negro joins the NAACP, CORE, the Urban League, and others. With money donations, the Jew gains control, then he sends the black man doing all this wading-in, boring-in, even burying-in–everything but buying-in. Never shows him how to set up factories and hotels. Never advises him how to own what he wants. No, when there’s something worth owning, the Jew’s got it. Walk up and down in any Negro ghetto in America. Ninety percent of the worthwhile businesses you see are Jew-owned. Every night they take the money out. This helps the black man’s community stay a ghetto.

PLAYBOY: Isn’t it true that many Gentiles have also labored with dedication to advance integration and economic improvement for the Negro, as volunteer workers for the NAACP, CORE and many other interracial agencies?

MALCOLM X: A man who tosses worms in the river isn’t necessarily a friend of the fish. All the fish who take him for a friend, who think the worm’s got no hook in it, usually end up in the frying pan. All these things dangled before us by the white liberal posing as a friend and benefactor have turned out to be nothing but bait to make us think we’re making progress. The Supreme Court decision has never been enforced. Desegregation has never taken place. The promises have never been fulfilled. We have received only tokens, substitutes, trickery and deceit.

PLAYBOY: What motives do you impute to PLAYBOY for providing you with this opportunity for the free discussion of your views?

MALCOLM X: I think you want to sell magazines. I’ve never seen a sincere white man, not when it comes to helping black people. Usually things like this are done by white people to benefit themselves. The white man’s primary interest is not to elevate the thinking of black people, or to waken black people, or white people either. The white man is interested in the black man only to the extent that the black man is of use to him. The white man’s interest is to make money, to exploit.

PLAYBOY: Is there any white man on earth whom you would concede to have the Negro’s welfare genuinely at heart?

MALCOLM X: I say, sir, that you can never make an intelligent judgment without evidence. If any man will study the entire history of the relationship between the white man and the black man, no evidence will be found that justifies any confidence or faith that the black man might have in the white man today.

PLAYBOY: Then you consider it impossible for the white man to be anything but an exploiter and a hypocrite in his relations with the Negro?

MALCOLM X: Is it wrong to attribute a predisposition to wheat before it comes up out of the ground? Wheat’s characteristics and nature make it wheat. It differs from barley because of its nature. Wheat perpetuates its own characteristics just as the white race does. White people are born devils by nature. They don’t become so by deeds. If you never put popcorn in a skillet, it would still be popcorn. Put the heat to it, it will pop.

PLAYBOY: You say that white men are devils by nature. Was Christ a devil?

MALCOLM X: Christ wasn’t white. Christ was a black man.

PLAYBOY: On what Scripture do you base this assertion?

MALCOLM X: Sir, Billy Graham has made the same statement in public. Why not ask him what Scripture he found it in? When Pope Pius XII died, LIFE magazine carried a picture of him in his privatestudy kneeling before a black Christ. What was the source of their information? All white people who have studied history and geography know that Christ was a black man. Only the poor, brainwashed American Negro has been made to believe that Christ was white, to maneuver him into worshiping the white man. After becoming a Muslim in prison, I read almost everything I could put my hands on in the prison library. I began to think back on everything I had read and especially with the histories, I realized that nearly all of them read by the general public have been made into white histories. I found out that the history-whitening process either had left out great things that black men had done, or some of the great black men had gotten whitened.

PLAYBOY: Would you list a few of these men?

MALCOLM X: Well, Hannibal, the most successful general that ever lived, was a black man. So was Beethoven; Beethoven’s father was one of the blackamoors that hired themselves out in Europe as professional soldiers. Haydn, Beethoven’s teacher, was of African descent. And Solomon. Great Biblical characters. Columbus, the discoverer of America, was a half-black man. Whole black empires, like the Moorish, have been whitened to hide the fact that a great black empire had conquered a white empire even before America was discovered. The Moorish civilization–black Africans–conquered and ruled Spain; they kept the light burning in Southern Europe. The word “Moor” means “black,” by the way. Egyptian civilization is a classic example of how the white man stole great African cultures and makes them appear today as white European. The black nation of Egypt is the only country that has a science named after its culture: Egyptology. The ancient Sumerians, a black-skinned people, occupied the Middle Eastern areas and were contemporary with the Egyptian civilization. The Incas, the Aztecs, the Mayans, all dark-skinned Indian people, had a highly developed culture here in America, in what is now Mexico and northern South America. These people had mastered agriculture at the time when European white people were still living in mud huts and eating weeds. But white children, or black children, or grownups here today in America don’t get to read this in the average books they are exposed to.

PLAYBOY: Can you cite any authoritative historical documents for these observations?

MALCOLM X: I can cite a great many, sir. You could start with Herodotus, the Greek historian. He outright described the Egyptians as “black, with woolly hair.” And the American archaeologist and Egyptologist James Henry Breasted did the same thing. Read Pliny. Read any of the ancient Roman, Greek and, more recently, European anthropologists and archaeologists.

PLAYBOY: You seem to have based your thesis on the premise that all nonwhite races are necessarily black.

MALCOLM X: Mr. Muhammad says that the red, the brown and the yellow are indeed all part of the black nation. Which means that black, brown, red, yellow, all are brothers, all are one family. The white one is a stranger. He’s the odd fellow.

PLAYBOY: Since your classification of black peoples apparently includes the light-skinned Oriental, Middle Eastern and possibly even Latin races as well as the darker Indian and Negroid strains, just how do you decide how light-skinned it’s permissible to be before being condemned as white? And if Caucasian whites are devils by nature, do you classify people by degrees of devilishness according to the lightness of their skin?

MALCOLM X: I don’t worry about these little technicalities. But I know that white society has always considered that one drop of black blood makes you black. To me, if one drop can do this, it only shows the power of one drop of black blood. And I know another thing–that Negroes who used to be light enough to pass for white have seen the handwriting on the wall and are beginning to come back and identify with their own kind. And white people who also are seeing the pendulum of time catching up with them are now trying to join with blacks, or even find traces of black blood in their own veins, hoping that it will save them from the catastrophe they see ahead. But no devil can fool God. Muslims have a little poem about them. It goes, “One drop will make you black, and will also in days to come save your soul.”

PLAYBOY: As one of this vast elite, do you hold the familiar majority attitude toward minority groups–regarding the white race, in this case, as inferior in quality as well as quantity to what you call the “black nation”?

MALCOLM X: Thoughtful white people know they are inferior to black people. Even Eastland knows it. Anyone who has studied the genetic phase of biology knows that white is considered recessive and black is considered dominant. When you want strong coffee, you ask for black coffee. If you want it light, you want it weak, integrated with white milk. Just like these Negroes who weaken themselves and their race by this integrating and intermixing with whites. If you want bread with no nutritional value, you ask for white bread. All the good that was in it has been bleached out of it, and it will constipate you. If you want pure flour, you ask for dark flour, whole-wheat flour. If you want pure sugar, you want dark sugar.

PLAYBOY: If all whites are devilish by nature, as you have alleged, and if black and white are essentially opposite, as you have just stated, do you view all black men–with the exception of their non-Muslim leaders–as fundamentally angelic?

MALCOLM X: No, there is plenty wrong with Negroes. They have no society. They’re robots, automations. No minds of their own. I hate to say that about us, but it’s the truth. They are a black body with a white brain. Like the monster Frankenstein. The top part is your bourgeois Negro. He’s your integrator. He’s not interested in his poor black brothers. He’s usually so deep in debt from trying to copy the white man’s social habits that he doesn’t have time to worry about nothing else. They buy the most expensive clothes and cars and eat the cheapest food. They act more like the white man than the white man does himself. These are the ones that hide their sympathy for Mr. Muhammad’s teachings. It conflicts with the sources from which they get their white-man’s crumbs. This class to us are the fence-sitters. They have one eye on the white man and the other eye on the Muslims. They’ll jump whichever way they see the wind blowing. Then there’s the middle class of the Negro masses, the ones not in the ghetto, who realize that life is a struggle, who are conscious of all the injustices being done and of the constant state of insecurity in which they live. They’re ready to take some stand against everything that’s against them. Now, when this group hears Mr. Muhammad’s teachings, they are the ones who come forth faster and identify themselves, and take immediate steps toward trying to bring into existence what Mr. Muhammad advocates. At the bottom of the social heap is the black man in the big-city ghetto. He lives night and day with the rats and cockroaches and drowns himself with alcohol and anesthetizes himself with dope, to try and forget where and what he is. That Negro has given up all hope. He’s the hardest one for us to reach, because he’s the deepest in the mud. But when you get him, you’ve got the best kind of Muslim. Because he makes the most drastic change. He’s the most fearless. He will stand the longest. He has nothing to lose, even his life, because he didn’t have that in the first place. I look upto myself, sir, as a prime example of this category–and as graphic an example as you could find of the salvation of the black man.

PLAYBOY: Could you give us a brief review of the early life that led to your own “salvation”?

MALCOLM X: Gladly. I was born in Omaha on May 19, 1925. My light color is the result of my mother’s mother having been raped by a white man. I hate every drop of white blood in me. Before I am indicted for hate again, sir–is it wrong to hate the blood of a rapist? But to continue: My father was a militant follower of Marcus Garvey’s “Back to Africa” movement. The Lansing, Michigan, equivalent of the Ku Klux Klan warned him to stop preaching Garvey’s message, but he kept on and one of my earliest memories is of being snatched awake one night with a lot of screaming going on because our home was afire. But my father got louder about Garvey, and the next time he was found bludgeoned in the head, lying across streetcar tracks. He died soon and our family was in a bad way. We were so hungry we were dizzy and we had nowhere to turn. Finally the authorities came in and we children were scattered about in different places as public wards. I happened to become the ward of a white couple who ran a correctional school for white boys. This family liked me in the way they liked their house pets. They got me enrolled in an all-white school. I was popular, I played sports and everything, and studied hard, and I stayed at the head of my class through the eighth grade. That summer I was 14, but I was big enough and looked old enough to get away with telling a lie that I was 21, so I got a job working in the dining car of a train that ran between Boston and New York City. On my layovers in New York, I’d go to Harlem. That’s where I saw in the bars all these men and women with what looked like the easiest life in the world. Plenty of money, big cars, all of it. I could tell they were in the rackets and vice. I hung around those bars whenever I came in town, and I kept my ears and eyes open and my mouth shut. And they kept their eyes on me, too. Finally, one day a numbers man told me that he needed a runner, and I never caught the night train back to Boston. Right there was when I started my life in crime. I was in all of it that the white police and the gangsters left open to the black criminal, sir. I was in numbers, bootleg liquor, “hot” goods, women. I sold the bodies of black women to white men, and white women to black men. I was in dope, I was in everything evil you could name. The only thing I could say good for myself, sir, was that I did not indulge in hitting anybody over the head.

PLAYBOY: By the time you were 16, according to the record, you had several men working for you in these various enterprises. Right?

MALCOLM X: Yes, sir. I turned the things I mentioned to you over to them. And I had a good working system of paying off policemen. It was here that I learned that vice and crime can only exist, at least the kind and level that I was in, to the degree that the police cooperate with it. I had several men working and I was a steerer myself. I steered white people with money from downtown to whatever kind of sin they wanted in Harlem. I didn’t care what they wanted, I knew where to take them to it. And I tell you what I noticed here–that my best customers always were the officials, the top police people, businessmen, politicians and clergymen. I never forgot that. I met all levels of these white people, supplied them with everything they wanted, and I saw that they were just a filthy race of devils. But despite the fact that my own father was murdered by whites, and I had seen my people all my life brutalized by whites, I was still blind enough to mix with them and socialize with them. I thought they were gods and goddesses–until Mr. Muhammad’s powerful spiritual message opened my eyes and enabled me to see them as a race of devils. Nothing had made me see the white man as he is until one word from the Honorable Elijah Muhammad opened my eyes overnight.

PLAYBOY: When did this happen?

MALCOLM X: In prison. I was finally caught and spent 77 months in three different prisons. But it was the greatest thing that ever happened to me, because it was in prison that I first heard the teachings of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. His teachings were what turned me around. The first time I heard the Honorable Elijah Muhammad’s statement, “The white man is the devil,” it just clicked. I am a good example of why Islam is spreading so rapidly across the land. I was nothing but another convict, a semi-illiterate criminal. Mr. Muhammad’s teachings were able to reach into prison, which is the level where people are considered to have fallen as low as they can go. His teachings brought me from behind prison walls and placed me on the podiums of some of the leading colleges and universities in the country. I often think, sir, that in 1946, I was sentenced to 8 to 10 years in Cambridge, Massachusetts, as a common thief who had never passed the eighth grade. And the next time I went back to Cambridge was in March 1961, as a guest speaker at the Harvard Law School Forum. This is the best example of Mr. Muhammad’s ability to take nothing and make something, to take nobody and make somebody.

PLAYBOY: Your rise to prominence in the Muslim organization has been so swift that a number of your own membership have hailed you as their articulate exemplar, and many anti-Muslims regard you as the real brains and power of the movement. What is your reaction to this sudden eminence?

MALCOLM X: Sir, it’s heresy to imply that I am in any way whatever even equal to Mr. Muhammad. No man on earth today is his equal. Whatever I am that is good, it is through what I have been taught by Mr. Muhammad.

PLAYBOY: Be that as it may, the time is near when your leader, who is 65, will have to retire from leadership of the Muslim movement. Many observers predict that when this day comes, the new Messenger of Allah in America–a role which you have called the most powerful of any black man in the world–will be Malcolm X. How do you feel about this prospect?

MALCOLM X: Sir, I can only say that God chose Mr. Muhammad as his Messenger, and Mr. Muhammad chose me and many others to help him. Only God has the say-so. But I will tell you one thing. I frankly don’t believe that I or anyone else am worthy to succeed Mr. Muhammad. No one preceded him. I don’t think I could make the sacrifice he has made, or set his good example. He has done more than lay down his life. But his work is already done with the seed he has planted among black people. If Mr. Muhammad and every identifiable follower he has, certainly including myself, were tomorrow removed from the scene by more of the white man’s brutality, there is one thing to be sure of: Mr. Muhammad’s teachings of the naked truth have fallen upon fertile soil among 20,000,000 black men here in this wilderness of North America.

PLAYBOY: Has the soil, in your opinion, been as fertile for Mr. Muhammad’s teachings elsewhere in the world–among the emerging nations of black Africa, for instance?

MALCOLM X: I think not only that his teachings have had considerable impact even in Africa but that the Honorable Elijah Muhammad has had a greater impact on the world than the rise of the African nations. I say this as objectively as I can, being a Muslim. Even the Christian missionaries are conceding that in black Africa, for every Christian conversion, there are two Muslim conversions.

PLAYBOY: Might conversions be even more numerous if it weren’t for the somewhat strained relations which are said by several Negro writers to exist between the black people of Africa and America?

MALCOLM X: Perhaps. You see, the American black man sees the African come here and live where the American black man can’t. The Negro sees the African come here with a sheet on and go places where the Negro–dressed like a white man, talking like a white man, sometimes as wealthy as the white man–can’t go. When I’m traveling around the country, I use my real Muslim name, Malik Shabazz. I make my hotel reservations under that name, and I always see the same thing I’ve just been telling you. I come to the desk and always see that “here-comes-a-Negro” look. It’s kind of a reserved, coldly tolerant cordiality. But when I say “Malik Shabazz,” their whole attitude changes: they snap to respect. They think I’m an African. People say what’s in a name? There’s a whole lot in a name. The American black man is seeing the African respected as a human being. The African gets respect because he has an identity and cultural roots. But most of all because the African owns some land. For these reasons he has his human rights recognized, and that makes his civil rights automatic.

PLAYBOY: Do you feel this is true of Negro civil and human rights in South Africa, where the doctrine of apartheid is enforced by the government of Prime Minister Verwoerd?

MALCOLM X: They don’t stand for anything different in South Africa than America stands for. The only difference is over there they preach as well as practice apartheid. America preaches freedom and practices slavery. America preaches integration and practices segregation. Verwoerd is an honest white man. So are the Barnetts, Faubuses, Eastlands and Rockwells. They want to keep all white people white. And we want to keep all black people black. As between the racists and the integrationists, I highly prefer the racists. I’d rather walk among rattlesnakes, whose constant rattle warns me where they are, than among those Northern snakes who grin and make you forget you’re still in a snake pit. Any white man is against blacks. The entire American economy is based on white supremacy. Even the religious philosophy is, in essence, white supremacy. A white Jesus. A white Virgin. White angels. White everything. But a black Devil, of course. The “Uncle Sam” political foundation is based on white supremacy, relegating nonwhites to second-class citizenship. It goes without saying that the social philosophy is strictly white supremacist. And the educational system perpetuates white supremacy.

PLAYBOY: Are you contradicting yourself by denouncing white supremacy while praising its practitioners, since you admit that you share their goal of separation?

MALCOLM X: The fact that I prefer the candor of the Southern segregationist to the hypocrisy of the Northern integrationist doesn’t alter the basic immorality of white supremacy. A devil is still a devil whether he wears a bed sheet or a Brooks Brothers suit. The Honorable Elijah Muhammad teaches separation simply because any forcible attempt to integrate America completely would result in another Civil War, a catastrophic explosion among whites which would destroy America–and still not solve the problem. But Mr. Muhammad’s solution of separate black and white would solve the problem neatly for both the white and black man, and America would be saved. Then the whole world would give Uncle Sam credit for being something other than a hypocrite.

PLAYBOY: Do you feel that the Administration’s successful stand on the integration of James Meredith into the University of Mississippi has demonstrated that the Government–far from being hypocritical–is sympathetic with the Negro’s aspirations for equality?

MALCOLM X: What was accomplished? It took 15,000 troops to put Meredith in the University of Mississippi. Those troops and $3,000,000–that’s what was spent–to get one Negro in. That $3,000,000 could have been used much more wisely by the Federal Government to elevate the living standards of all the Negroes in Mississippi.

PLAYBOY: It is a matter of record that President Kennedy, in the face of Southern opposition, championed the appointment of Dr. Robert Weaver as the first Negro Cabinet member. Does this indicate to you, as it does to many Negro leaders, that the Administration is determined to battle the forces of white supremacy?

MALCOLM X: Kennedy doesn’t have to fight; he’s the President. He didn’t have any fight replacing Ribicoff with Celebrezze. He didn’t have any trouble putting Goldberg on the Supreme Court. He hasn’t had any trouble getting anybody in but Weaver and Thurgood Marshall. He wasn’t worried about Congressional objection when he challenged U.S. Steel. He wasn’t worried about either Congressional reaction or Russian reaction or even world reaction when he blockaded Cuba. But when it comes to the rights of the Negro, who helped to put him in office, then he’s afraid of littlepockets of white resistance.

PLAYBOY: Has any American President, in your opinion–Lincoln, FDR, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy–accomplished anything worthwhile for the Negro?

MALCOLM X: None of them have ever done anything for Negroes. All of them have tricked the Negro, and made false promises to him at election times which they never fulfilled. Lincoln’s concern wasn’t freedom for the blacks but to save the Union.

PLAYBOY: Wasn’t the Civil War fought to decide whether this nation could, in the words of Lincoln, “endure permanently half slave and half free”?

MALCOLM X: Sir, many, many people are completely misinformed about Lincoln and the Negro. That war involved two thieves, the North and the South, fighting over the spoils. The further we get away from the actual incident, the more they are trying to make it sound as though the battle was over the black man. Lincoln said that if he could save the Union without freeing the slaves, he would. But after two years of killing and carnage he found out he would have to free the slaves. He wasn’t interested in the slaves but in the Union. As for the Emancipation Proclamation, sir, it was an empty document. If it freed the slaves, why, a century later, are we still battling for civil rights?

PLAYBOY: Despite the fact that the goal of racial equality is not yet realized, many sociologists–and a number of Negro commentators–agree that no minority group on earth has made as much social, civil and economic progress as the American Negro in the past 100 years. What is your reaction to this view?

MALCOLM X: Sir, I hear that everywhere almost exactly as you state it. This is one of the biggest myths that the American black man himself believes in. Every immigrant ethnic group that has come to this country is now a genuinely first-class citizen group–every one of them but the black man, who was here when they came. While everybody else is sharing the fruit, the black man is just now starting to be thrown some seeds. It is our hope that through the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, we will at last get the soil to plant the seeds in. You talk about the progress of the Negro–I’ll tell you, mister, it’s just because the Negro has been in America while America has gone forward that the Negro appears to have gone forward. The Negro is like a man on a luxury commuter train doing 90 miles an hour. He looks out of the window, along with all the white passengers in their Pullman chairs, and he thinks he’s doing 90, too. Then he gets to the men’s room and looks in the mirror–and he sees he’s not really getting anywhere at all. His reflection shows a black man standing there in the white uniform of a dining-car steward. He may get on the 5:10, all right, but he sure won’t be getting off at Westport.

PLAYBOY: Is there anything then, in your opinion, that could be done–by either whites or blacks–to expedite the social and economic progress of the Negro in America?

MALCOLM X: First of all, the white man must finally realize that he’s the one who has committed the crimes that have produced the miserable condition that our people are in. He can’t hide this guilt by reviling us today because we answer his criminal acts–past and present–with extreme and uncompromising resentment. He cannot hide his guilt by accusing us, his victims, of being racists, extremists and black supremacists. The white man must realize that the sins of the fathers are about to be visited upon the heads of the children who have continued those sins, only in more sophisticated ways. Mr. Elijah Muhammad is warning this generation of white people that they, too, are also facing a time of harvest in which they will have to pay for the crime committed when their grandfathers made slaves out of us. But there is something the white man can do to avert this fate. He must atone–and this can only be done by allowing black men, those who choose, to leave this land of bondage and go to a land of our own. But if he doesn’t want a mass movement of our people away from this house of bondage, then he should separate this country. He should give us several states here on American soil, where those of us who wish to can go and set up our own government, our own economic system, our own civilization. Since we have given over 300 years of our slave labor to the white man’s America, helped to build it up for him, it’s only right that white America should give us everything we need in finance and materials for the next 25 years, until our own nation is able to stand on its feet. Then, if the Western Hemisphere is attacked by outside enemies, we would have both the capability and the motivation to join in defending the hemisphere, in which we would then have a sovereign stake. The Honorable Elijah Muhammad says that the black man has served under the rule of all the other peoples of the earth at one time or another in the past. He teaches that it is now God’s intention to put the black man back at the top of civilization, where he was in the beginning–before Adam, the white man, was created. The world since Adam has been white–and corrupt. The world of tomorrow will be black–and righteous. In the white world there has been nothing but slavery, suffering, death and colonialism. In the black world of tomorrow, there will be true freedom, justice and equality for all. And that day is coming–sooner than you think.

So-called “reality” TV is a distraction from genuine reality.

On December 1st 2011 the US Senate wiped its ass with what was left of The Constitution and flushed it down the toilet.  Meanwhile all anyone can think about are Kimbella and Krissy rufflin’ feathers on Love & Hip-Hop.  Ah, television… the Great Pacifier.

The passing of the National Defense Authorization Act barely made news, like it was a decision on what the Senate ordered for lunch.  Kim Kardashian gets more publicity than this.  This is a significant event, as acknowledged by NewsVoice:

The passage of this law is nothing less than an outright declaration of WAR against the American People by the military-connected power elite. If this is signed into law, it will shred the remaining tenants of the Bill of Rights and unleash upon America a total military dictatorship, complete with secret arrests, secret prisons, unlawful interrogations, indefinite detainment without ever being charged with a crime, the torture of Americans and even the ”legitimate assassination” of U.S. citizens on right here on American soil!

Over the years our rights have been stripped away one-by-one, like a sergeant losing his stripes.  Nobody gives a shit, we live quite comfortably in America.  Since we’ve got some rebels in the mood to revolt, let’s Occupy The Senate.  Or is that not as trendy?

Congrats to my man Darrell Francis, chief photographer and H.N.I.C. of Purple City Dreamgirls.  He just released the premier issue of DreamGirls Magazine… I know how much time and hard work he put into this.  As Hannibal from the A-Team would say, “I love it when a plan comes together.”

Keani Cochelle, who’s always been good money with The Spizzy, is DreamGirls cover model.  She’s pictured above and it’s well-known that I think the world of her.  Also featured is the lovely Kai Lei, another friend of ours.  Brandy Broussard, who has a special-edition DreamGirls cover of her own, appears in this premier issue as well.  In addition to these three heavyweights, the magazine also features Kendall Bruton [who was also spotlighted here], Bonnie B, Kemi Shade and Chocolate Dolly from the U.K., among others.  Purple City Dreamgirls has always been about quality and this is a proper debut.
